Organizing Space

This is a space in which participants can come together to network and begin organizing around various issues. The conference team will host some of the activities that will take place during this time. We also invite all conference participants to use this space to connect with others. This is a unique opportunity to begin national organizing conversations on education issues. Please email Tara at tara(at)edliberation.org if you have some ideas you would like to bring to the space.

As activities are developed we will add them to this list. So watch this space!

Combatting Privatization

Across the country public schools are being aggressively turned over to private entities. Join us as we talk about the connection between the push for centralized, anti-democratic control of urban districts and the process of privatization in our communities. Let's examine how local organizations can connect nationally to increase democracy and resist privatization.

National Student Bill of Rights

Youth from cities across the country have been working since Free Minds, Free People 2009 to draft local bills of rights. These youth have organized this session to bring together youth from the conference to develop a national bill. That process will begin Saturday afternoon and continue during this time. All youth are invited. We will use this time to discuss the ideas for rights that were suggested Saturday and to develop next steps in this process.

The Role of White Educators and Movement Builders in Education for Liberation Work

This discussion will focus on how we can incorporate privilege and power
concepts into education for liberation practices with an emphasis on white
privilege and white supremacy. We will also explore ideas for connecting
privileged / white students to education for liberation movement building
efforts based on the goal of dismantling racism among white populations in
the U.S. and increasing the number of white allies to people of color.
