Dr. Leigh Patel Stevens summarizes the "Charter Schools & Public Schools" plenary, offer thoughts on FMFP
The Saturday morning plenary session featured the following participants: moderator and CUNY professor Michele Fine, Co-director of the Learning Community, Sarah Friedman, Jackie Lee a high school junior with Youth in Action and the Youth 4 Change Alliance, founder of Parents United for Public Education, Helen Gym and Barbara Fields from Black Educators Alliance of MA.
It was a mixed bag of both public and charter school folks which made for an interesting and unexpected discussion. Dr. Stevens talks about the results of the plenary, and shares some words on the Free Minds, Free People conference.
Keep an eye out for video footage of Charter Schools & Public Schools: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Currently, this plenary session is sitting in a queue behind Curtis Acosta's workshop on the fight to save Ethnic Studies at Tucson High School, Dr. Warren's panel on white people's role in youth activism and liberatory education, and Asian American Youth Rising: Building power and making change. Phew!
